沖縄移民125周年を祝う 第43回オキナワン・フェスティバル開催

今年は節目の年とあって沖縄からも多数の出演者が来布。久米島出身・唄三線の桃原純次さんや東（あがり）シスターズ、那覇の泉崎旗頭保存会、金武町の当山久三ロマンシアターなどが舞台を彩りました。さらに、ハワイ企業サンヌードルの協力によりスペシャルゲストとして歌手・夏川りみさんが登場。最終日にはその伸びやかな歌声が会場を包み、観客は大きな感動に浸りました。

沖縄からの移民は、異国の地で困難に直面しながらも助け合い、地域社会を築き上げてきました。戦後の食糧難には豚550頭を沖縄に送り、復興を支えた歴史も。首里城再建に向けても多額の寄付を続けるなど、郷里との絆を守り続けてきました。

玉城デニー知事は「戦後80年の節目に、沖縄の復興を支えてくださったハワイの県系人の功績を決して忘れない」と述べ、深い感謝を表しました。また、ハワイ沖縄連合会のフランセス・久場会長も「アロハスピリットと“いちゃりばちょーでー”の精神は一つ。次の世代に守り伝えたい」と語り、未来への継承を誓いました。

知事は8月28日から9月3日までハワイを訪問。州観光局長や在ホノルル日本国総領事との面談、ハワイ州副知事や米海兵隊関係者との意見交換を行ったほか、ハワイ沖縄姉妹提携40周年記念式典にも出席した。さらにジル・トクダ連邦下院議員との会談、東西センターでの留学生との交流、アロハパーティーでのボランティア激励など精力的に公務をこなしました。

沖縄移民125周年を迎えた今年、アロハスピリットとウチナーンチュの心「ゆいまーる」「いちゃりばちょーでー」が改めて融合し、その文化と精神が確実に次世代へと引き継がれていくことを印象づける節目となりました。

Okinawan Festival Marks 125 Years of Immigration to Hawaii

HONOLULU — This year’s Okinawan Festival carried special significance as it commemorated the 125th anniversary of Okinawan immigration to Hawaii. Performers from Okinawa traveled to Honolulu, bringing music, dance, and cultural pride to the celebration.

The lineup featured singer and sanshin player Junji Tohbaru from Kumejima, the Agari Sisters, the Izumizaki Flag Drum Preservation Society of Naha, and the Toyama Kyuzo Roman Theater from Kin Town. With the support of Hawaii-based Sun Noodle, special guest Rimi Natsukawa capped the festival with her soaring vocals, leaving the audience deeply moved.

The event also highlighted the enduring bonds between Okinawa and Hawaii. After World War II, Okinawans in Hawaii sent 550 pigs to aid recovery during food shortages and have continued supporting Okinawa through contributions such as donations to rebuild Shuri Castle.

Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki, attending the festival, expressed deep gratitude: “On this 80th year since the war, we will never forget the great contributions of Okinawans in Hawaii who supported Okinawa’s recovery.”

Frances Kuba, president of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, added: “The Aloha Spirit and the Okinawan saying ichariba choodee—once we meet, we are family—are one and the same. We must pass this spirit to the next generation.”

Governor Tamaki’s Hawaii visit from August 28 to September 3 included meetings with the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Japan’s Consul General in Honolulu, Hawaii’s lieutenant governor, U.S. Marine Corps officials, and U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda. He also attended the 40th anniversary of the Hawaii-Okinawa Sister State Agreement, visited the East-West Center to engage with students, and thanked volunteers at the festival’s Aloha Party.

The milestone year reaffirmed how the Aloha Spirit and Okinawan values of yuimaaru (mutual support) and ichariba choodeecontinue to blend in Hawaii, ensuring the culture and spirit are passed on to future generations.
