The 25th Ehime Maru Memorial Ceremony, which had been scheduled to take place in Honolulu on February 9, 2026, was canceled due to severe weather conditions. Following the issuance of a state emergency proclamation and the closure of city parks, the official ceremony planned at Kaka\u02bbako Waterfront Park was called off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, an informal memorial service was held on short notice at the office of the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, with attendance limited to a small number of participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year, attendees included two families of the victims from Uwajima\u2014four family members in total (Mr. and Mrs. Mizuguchi, and the Makizawa sisters)\u2014as well as Mr. Munenobu Date, the 13th head of the Uwajima Date family; eight representatives from the Uwajima Lions Club; one physician and five medical residents from Uwajima City Hospital, who were participating in an exchange program between the hospital and the University of Hawaii\u2019s John A.
